Amma has influenced not only Indians but others as well. Gordon Westerland, an American is one of them.
Mr. Westerland chanced on a review of "The Life and Teachings of Mother", by Sri Bhardwaja, and ordered a copy. After reading that introductory book, he ordered all the available literature about Amma. Evidently he made a thorough study of the literature because what he said, being a Director of Christ Foundation, was amazing. He said that Amma was one of the highest expressions of spirituality that ever came in human form.
As time passed, he could see Amma in nature all around him. When a hungry dog followed him home, he saw only Amma in that creature, fled it with the bread he was carrying and went home empty handed. In the twittering of the birds, he heard the voice of Amma. He saw only Amma’s eyes in the twinkling stars above. He found pleasure in sending to Amma whatever amount was left with him.
Some brothers wrote to him to come and visit Amma at Jillellamudi to gain a better understanding of her. His classic answer was "What is the need when I’m already seeing her here?".
Mr. Westerland visited Jillellamudi, a few years ago. He received a spontaneous warm welcome. During his brief but meaningful stay, he radiated bliss and innocence. Everyone loved him the moment they saw him. Though it was the first time any of them had met him, no one felt he was a stranger.
In the presence of Amma’s image in the Anasuyeswaralayam, he was moved to tears and said "Amma is very much here, she is very active".
No wonder Amma gave that experience to him as we was far advanced spiritually even before he came here. The rambling thoughts expressed by him long ago is proof enough, if such is needed, for the depth of advaitic understanding he has reached. The concept enunciated by him is in complete consonance with that of Amma.
